My name is Stevey and I’ve been baking for almost ten years now. Our business was started a year ago, and it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve put a lot of love into the products and branding that goes into Beary Boxes, which I think is one of the reasons it’s done so well. I think because I’ve always had a love for the creative arts that I’m able to express my creativity through my desserts and my customers appreciate that.
Do you have a favorite holiday meal?
Tamales! I don’t know why we ever made it a rule where we can only eat them at Christmastime, I feel like we should have them year-round! But it’s always nice to eat them with my family and just gather together to eat and be happy.
What is a tip that you wish you learned earlier?
Although people told me a million times, I never engraved into my brain the ‘don’t compare yourself to others’ rule. But now that I’m getting more experience and seeing more small businesses within the community, I really have to push myself to follow it. I think we’re always tempted as creators to compare ourselves, to be hard on ourselves when looking at other people’s progress. But it really doesn’t help you in the long run. Taking a step back and just allowing myself to be proud of my progress without looking at other businesses has made a big difference in my attitude and my work as a whole.
Stevey do you have a favorite song?
I really love The Killers Christmas albums, they’re always good. So I’m partial to Don’t Shoot Me Santa because it’s a funny one, and Happy Birthday Guadalupe because I and my husband just love that song and we listen to it on repeat every year.
Do you have something that you’re proud of as a creator?
I’ve always been really proud of my attention to detail. I think people when they first start their businesses, they’re afraid to spend money or time because they think they’re going to fail. But you should never half-ass something that you want to succeed. So I look at where I started with my branding, packaging, etc. and I’m really proud of how I made sure everything looks amazing. It can be as simple as fixing a font size on an advertisement or making sure all bags at your market are the same. It takes more than just showing up with your product, it’s about presentation. So I’m really proud that I’ve been good at that.
