Hey guys I’m Ryan! I am a co host on the Comic Tom 101 YouTube channel and podcast. Also I am the co writer on the comic book Crashdown coming out in the new year.
Who was your influences to get into the comic book world?
Unlike a lot of comic nerds, I didn’t really discover the medium until college. My college roommate Nick had a pretty thorough library of the classics, and eventually he introduced me to them.
What’s your favorite story line since you started reading comics?
Favorite storyline!? There are so many! I’m gonna cheat and pick three: Green Lantern by Geoff Johns, Criminal by Ed Brubaker, and The Department of Truth by James Tynion IV.
Who’s your favorite comic book character and why?
My favorite comic character spins out of that last question. I’m a big fan of Green Lantern and the way their superpower is charged from their own inner courage and willpower. It’s always a really good reminder to believe in yourself and have confidence, and that’s why I got the Green Lantern symbol tattooed on my shoulder! But my favorite character in all of comic books is Sinestro, Green Lantern’s nemesis…if only because villains are more complex!
What would captivate someone to reading your new book?
All along while writing Crashdown, one of the main things I made sure to keep in mind was to create something that I would want to read myself. Our comic is about a group of colonists arriving at and exploring a hostile planet after Earth is no longer habitable, so you can expect a crash-landing/survival action story with some sci-fi twists (the TV series Lost was very much an inspiration), infused with some classic H.P. Lovecraft-style cosmic horror. If you’re a fan of movies like Alien, The Mist, Hereditary, The Ruins or The Thing, you’ll find lots to love about Crashdown!
What inspired you to create Crashdown?
As far as Crashdown goes, my friend Tom (ComicTom101) had been toying with the idea of teaming up with his friend, legendary comic artist Ben Templesmith, to create a horror comic together. It wasn’t until the team at Whatnot Publishing and Massive Publishing found out years later and asked Tom if he was still serious about making a comic book that Tom reached out to me to see if I’d want to co-write something with him. Tom and I have always bonded over a mutual love of horror stories, and if you have Ben Templesmith providing the art for you, you play to his strengths and do a horror story. Making a horror comic was never in question, and the rest grew from there!
